Correlation between characteristics of schizophrenic patients and recurrence rate at Sungai Bangkong Psychiatric Hospital in Pontianak City

Background: Schizophrenia is a serious mental disorder and sufferers often experience recurrency (about 40-92%). The incidence of schizophrenia can be influenced by patients"™ characteristics such as: age, gender, marital status, levels of education, and employment. This research aimed to asses the relationship between characteristics of schizophrenic patients and recurrence rate at Sungai Bangkong psychiatric hospital in Pontianak. Methods: This study was a descriptive correlation study with cross sectional design. As much as 61 subjects participated in the study. Independent variable in was characteristics of schizophrenic patients and dependent variable was recurrence rate obtained from medical record. Data was analyzed using Kendall tau b test using SPSS 24. Results: Kendall tau b test showed that there was no significant correlation between characteristics of schizophrenic patients, i.e. age, gender, marital status, levels of education, and employment, with recurrence rate (p>0.05). Conclusions: There was no correlation between characteristics of schizophrenic patients and recurrence rate at the Sungai Bangkong psychiatric hospital in Pontianak.
