AN ANALYSIS OF THE READING COMPREHENSION TEST OF NINTH-GRADE STUDENTS ON RECOUNT TEXT AT SMP QUR’AN LABBAIK KUBURAYA

Abstract

This study aims to determine the ability of ninth-grade students of SMP Qur'an Labbaik Kuburaya in reading comprehension of recount texts. This study used a quantitative descriptive method and data were collected through a reading comprehension test that measures students' abilities in identifying general information, specific details, sequences of events, vocabulary, and making inferences. The participants of the study were 30 ninth-grade EFL students. The collected data were analyzed quantitatively using several formulas. The results showed that: the average class performance was in the Good category, which indicates that students performed well on literal comprehension tasks. In contrast, students' weakest performance was on vocabulary in context, where they had difficulty in inferring the meaning of unknown words from the surrounding text. These results highlight the need for targeted learning strategies in developing EFL reading comprehension.
