Sifat Materialisme teryata merupakan pendorong lahirnya eksistensialisme. Yang dimaksud dengan Eksistensi ialah cara orang berada di dunia. Eksistensialisme lahir sebagai reaksi terhadap idealisme. Materialisme dan idealisme adalah dua pandangan filsafat tentang hakikat yang ekstrim. Keduanya berisi benih-benih kebenaran, tetapi keduanya juga salah. Eksistensialisme ingin mencari jalan keluar dan kedua ekstrimitas itu. Materialisme memandang kejasmanian (materi) sebagai keseluruhan manusia, padahal itu hanyalah aspek manusia. Materialisme menganggap manusia hanyalah sesuatu yang ada, tanpa menjadi subyek. Manusia berpikir, berkesadaran inilah yang tidak disadari oleh materialisme. Sebaliknya berpikir, berkesadaran dilebih-lebihkan oleh idealisme sehingga menjadi seluruh manusia, bahkan dilebih-lebihkan lagi sampai menjadi tidak ada barang lain selain pikiran.
