Germination Response of Liberica Coffee Seeds to Various Seed Dormancy Breaking Methods

Coffee (Coffea sp.) is a major plantation commodity with significant market potential both domestically and internationally. Coffee seeds require a relatively long time to germinate. The germination process is influenced by several factors, including seed dormancy conditions. This study aims to determine the best dormancy-breaking method to accelerate the germination of Liberica coffee seeds.The research was conducted at the Screen House of the Plantation Seed Inspection and Certification Unit (UPT) in West Kalimantan from March to June 2024. A Completely Randomized Design (CRD) was used, consisting of six treatments: (A) soaking at an initial temperature of 75 °C for 60 minutes, repeated for 7 days; (B) soaking in 100% young coconut water for 4 hours; (C) soaking in 20% Hâ‚‚SOâ‚„ solution for 25 minutes; (D) husk peeling; (E) rubbing on both sides; and (F) piercing the seed coat with a needle at the plumule tip. The observed variables in this study included vigor index, germination uniformity, germination capacity, germination speed, plumule length, and radicle length. The results showed that husk peeling was the most effective treatment, producing the highest average vigor index values.References
