Abstract

Background: Shigella flexneri is the most common bacteria caused
diarrhea with number of cases increased each year. Mangosteen peel has
been used for years by most of Indonesian as a traditional medicine for the
treatment of diarrhea, dysentery, and infected wound. Experimental studies
have demonstrated that extract of Garcinia mangostana L. peel has
antimicrobial activity. Objective: This study aimed to investigate the
antibacterial activity of ethyl acetate fraction of Garcinia mangostana L. peel
methanol extract and the effective concentration to inhibit the growth of
Shigella flexneri. Methods: The ethyl acetate fraction obtained from liquid
fractionation of methanolic extract. Extracts were phytochemically tested
and antibacterial activity test by well diffusion method against Shigella
flexneri. Positive control used 5 µg ciprofloxacin and negative control used
10% DMSO. Results: Phytochemical screening of ethyl acetate fraction of
Garcinia mangostana L. methanol extract contained alkaloid, saponin,
tannin, flavonoid, and triterpenoid. The effective concentration to inhibit the
growth of the Shigella flexneri was 10% (p = 0.000). Conclusion: Ethyl
acetate fraction of methanol extract of Garcinia mangostana L. peel has
antibacterial activity against Shigella flexneri.
