UJI AKTIVITAS ANTIBAKTERI FRAKSI ETIL ASETAT KULIT BUAH MANGGIS (Garcinia mangostana Linn) TERHADAP Escherichia coli SECARA IN VITRO
Abstract
Background: Infectious disease is one of the public health problems indeveloping countries such as Indonesia. Escherichia coli (E. coli) are the
most common etiology of urinary tract infections, diarrhea, pyogenic
infections and septicemia. Mangosteen (Garcinia mangostana Linn.) is
one of well known tropical fruit in Indonesia. Previous studies found that
there were antibacterial activities of mangosteen peel. There is a few
study antibacterial potential of mangosteen, especially in fraction form.
Therefore, it is necessary to find more informations of this study.
Objective: This research aims to find know chemical compounds and
antibacterial activity of ethyl acetate fraction of mangosteen peel (Garcinia
mangostana L.) and its effective inhibitory concentration against the
growth of Escherichia coli. Method: Mangosteen peel was extracted by
maceration using methanol. This extracts was fractionated using ethyl
acetate. Its chemical compounds were determined by phytochemical
screening. Antibacterial activity of ethyl acetate fraction tested with cup
plate technique. Ciprofloxacin 5 µg/15 µl was used as positive control while
DMSO 10% was used as negative control. Result: Ethyl acetate fraction
contains alkaloid, tannin, saponin, flavonoid and terpenoid. Ethyl acetate
fraction showed an antibacterial activity against Escherichia coli and its
activities increased after 48 hours incubation. The effective inhibitory
concentration against the growth of Escherichia coli was 5%. Conclusion:
Ethyl acetate fraction of mangosteen peel has antibacterial activity against
Escherichia coli as bactericides.
