Abstract

Eggshell includes organic waste, which is part of the eggs produced by laying hens. The eggshell contains 94% calcium carbonate, and it can develop into a health supplement with processed into an eggshell powder. Characterization of eggshell powder that a basis for the development of various pharmaceutical dosage forms. This study aims to determine the moisture content and saponin compounds in eggshells by observing the foam index, fish index, and hemolytic index. Testing the moisture content using a moisture analyzer. The eggshell powder was dissolved in water at a foam index of 1%, fish index of 2%, hemolytic index of 1%. The foam index was carried out by placing the eggshell solution in a test tube and shaking it after observing it for 15 minutes. The fish index made an eggshell solution with a 2% ; 1.5%; 1%; 0.5%; 0.1%, and 3 tilapia fish for 1 hour. The hemolytic index for the preliminary test made a series of concentrations in 4 test tubes; if there was hemolysis in 4 tubes, then continued to the preliminary test. The moisture content was 0.30 ± 0.032%, the foam index was <100, the fish index was 67, and there was no hemolysis on the hemolytic index. Eggshells with a moisture content of 0.30 ± 0.032% and do not contain saponin compounds with a toxic effect.
