Abstract

This research to analize the symbol and the meaning of Pedang Dance movement in Ngayau ceremony from the people of Dayak Mualang Subdistrict Sekadau. The research method is qualitative-descriptive method using ethnocoreology approach. The data were gained from Edmundus Linggie, Nasarius, Leonardus. In Ngayau ceremony, there is a dance which has symbol and meaning, they are honoring movement, circle movement (mengintai and nimang pedang), and playing sword movement. Honoring movement present the honoring symbol that has the meaning an honor to the pengayau which are going to the war and asking for blessing to the people. Mengintai movement present the symbol of spy that has the meaning to spy on enemy, to peer at enemy, and to wary on enemy"™s attack. Nimang Pedang movement present the symbol of sword veneration that has the meaning to adore and to honor the sword. Playing sword movement present the symbol of someone who is leaving for mengayau, has the meaning to defend from attack and to chase away the bad spirit and annoying ghost.
