Abstract

Abstract

Problem solving is an integral part of mathematics learning program, and so it should not be isolated part of the mathematics program. This study aims to find out the extent of van Hiele's geometry thinking level and students' problem solving abilities in a plane geometry matter that includes: the level of visualization and level of analysis. Subjects in this study were four students of class VIII A MTs Negeri 1 Pontianak. The study used case studies. Data collection techniques used are test techniques and direct communication techniques. The result of this research can be concluded that from four students there are two students (50%) in solving Polya stage problem is at level II, one student (25%) in solving Polya stage problem is at level III, and one student (25%) in solving Polya stage problem is at level IV. In general, the problem solving ability of students vary depending on the level of geometry thinking that is owned by students. The problem solving ability of students who are at the level of analysis thinking is higher than the ability of problem solving students who are at the level of visualization thinking.
