Abstract

Each student has different thinking process namely conceptual thinking process, semiconceptual thinking process and computational thinking process. Beside the difference in thinking processes, students may also differ on their cognitive style. This research tries to describe the thinking process of junior high school students in solving the story problem on cube and block material in terms of cognitive style of Field Independent and Field Dependent. By knowing the cognitive style and thinking process of students, the proper teaching method for each student according to their own cognitive style is expected to be chosen and the attention to each student according to the thinking process they have can be given. This research is a qualitative descriptive research. The subjects of the study were class IXA of SMP Muhammadiyah 1 Pontianak as many as 6 students consisted of 3 Field Independent students and 3 Field Dependent students. Data collection methods are done by GEFT test, written test and interview. Based on the results of data analysis to the writing tests and interviews, the obtained results are: 1.) The thinking process of three Field Independent students in solving the story problem of cube and block tends to be conceptual. 2.) The thinking process of three Field Dependent students in solving the story problem of cube and block tends to be semiconceptual.
