Abstract

Abstract

The aim of this study was to find out the strategies to overcome speaking anxiety in public speaking class at English Education Study Program of Teacher Training and Education Faculty of Tanjungpura University. The problem of this research was student's anxiety in public speaking class and how to overcome it. Based on the research problem, the design of this research is case study. The subject of this research is one student (Mr X) who has some criteria of having the experiences in public speaking anxiety, having the strategies to overcome the anxiety and has overcome the anxiety. The data were collected through personal narrative inquiry, semi structured interview and direct observation. The results of this study showed that rehearsal, relaxation, visualization, gestures, and using note card were the strategies to overcome speaking anxiety in public speaking class. It can be concluded that the student found strategies to overcome sepaking anxiety in public speaking class. In other words, these strategies gave significant effect to Mr X"™s performance during his speech and now Mr X feels comfortable to speak in front of the class.
