Abstract

This research aimed to find out what were the difficulties of students in solving word problems of linear equations one variable subject matter and what were the factors that cause students to experience these difficulties in grade VII SMP Negeri 15 Pontianak. The research method that used was a descriptive method with a case study. The subjects of this study were students of grade VII A who were then taken by six students, consisting of each of the two students with high, medium and lower levels of ability. Data collection that used were written test and direct communication with the interview. Based on the results of data analysis   known that difficulties include difficulties in changing everyday sentences on word questions into mathematical sentences, difficulties in making mathematical models to solve problems, difficulties in finding ways and steps to answer questions, and difficulties in performing exspression operations. The causes factors included lack of mastery of the material, lack of student perseverance in learning, and students lacking training in word problems in one variable linear equation subject matter.
