Abstract

Abstract

The aim of this research is to describe the students' mathematical representation on solving problems of relation and function. The type of this research is descriptive-qualitative. The subjects were 27  students in class IX-B of SMPN 6 Pontianak who had learned about relation and function before hand. The results showed there were many different representations based on the analysis of students' test sheets, namely the form of visual, symbolic and verbal representations. Visual representation could be observed when students solved the problem related to arrow diagram, Cartesian diagram and tables. Students solved the problems related to sequential pairs, algebraic equations and function formulas were all summarized to symbolic representation, while the verbal one could be observed by students will to represent their thinking through speaking abilities (words). From all of that, visual representation gained a highest frequency over others in this research.
