Abstract

Abstract

This study aims to describe the ability of high school students in solving HOTS questions on the basic law material of chemistry. The sample used in this study was students of class XI SMAN 1 Simpang Hulu and SMAN 1 Simpang Dua, totaling 110 students. The instruments used was HOTS questions at cognitive level to analyze (C4) and evaluate (C5). The form of research used is descriptive method with case studies. Data collection was carried out by means of tests, interviews, and documentation. The results showed that the ability of students in solving HOTS questions at SMAN was very low. Factors that cause students to make mistakes are not concentrating in solving questions and being too hasty, students do not have initial skills in basic chemical law material, cannot follow standard problem processing procedures, and do not accustomed to working on HOTS questions.
