Abstract

This study aims to describe the ability to write poetry in class X SMA Muhammadiyah 1 Pontianak based on aspects of the theme and diction of poetry. The method used in this research is descriptive method with quantitative research form. The technique used in determining the sample is purposive sampling because the sample is determined deliberately. The sample of this study were students of class X MIA 2 with a total of 33 students.The results showed that the students' ability in writing poetry was classified as capable with an average value of 84.09. Students who are able or get a score 70-100 are 30 people and students who get ascore of 069 are 3 people. The ability of class X students of SMA Muhammadiyah 1 Pontianak in writing poetry in terms of the aspect of the theme is categorized as capable with an average score of 87.87; In terms of the aspect of diction,it can be categorized as capable with an average value of 80.30.
