Abstract

Abstract

This study aims to determine the language skills of children with mental retardation. Mental retardation is a condition of mental development stalled or incomplete, which is mainly characterized by the presence of obstacles during the development of skills, so the effect on the level of intelligence is the ability of cognitive, language, motor and social. Mental retardation special needs by looking at the active / expressive language skills and passive / receptive abilities. The method used in this research is descriptive method and a from of qualitative research with the subject of a child with special mental retardation. After that the results of the study showed that Alvin"™s active / expressive language skills still experienced problems in the fluency of an articulation, speaking in short words , unable to hold a dialogue or communicate. Meanwhile, Alvin"™s passive / receptive language skills still experience the sentences he hears, his ability is only able to understand simple sentences.
