Abstract
This study aims to determine the technique of depicting characters in the novel
Batu-Batu Lapar, Bimala, and Siul Gelombang by Rabindranath Tagore, as well
as plans for implementing learning in schools. The method in this study is a
descriptive method in the form of qualitative research. The data sources of this
research are the novels Batu-Batu Lapar, Bimala, and Siul Gelombang by
Rabindranath Tagore and the data is in the form of quotations which are identified
as having indications of character depiction techniques. The results show (1) the
expository technique used by Rabindranath Tagore in his three novels informs the
character's personality traits in the story based on attitudes and behavior, physical
characteristics, occupation, intelligence, life history, circumstances or problems
faced, clothes used, and relationships with other characters, (2) the dramatic
technique used by Rabindranath Tagore in his three novels informs the personality
traits of the characters in the story indirectly as in the drama, by not describing
explicitly, but through verbal, nonverbal activities, and events that occur, (3)
Results research and novels in this study can be used as teaching materials for
learning literature on Indonesian language subjects at school.
