Abstract

Abstract

This study aims to describe the form of students' misconceptions and the causes of students'
misconceptions on the addition and subtraction of mixed fractions with natural numbers. The
research method used in this study is a descriptive method in the form of case study research.
The subjects in this study were students of class VA and the objects in this study were
misconceptions experienced by students. The location of this research is SDIT Al-Mumtaz
Pontianak City. Data collection techniques used in this study were essay tests or descriptions
and interviews. The results showed that the form of misconceptions experienced by students
was generalizing misconceptions because students did not understand the concepts in
fractions, specialization misconceptions because students equate one concept with other
concepts, and calculation misconceptions because students experienced errors in calculations.
The causes of generalizing misconceptions are caused by students' preconceptions or initial
concepts, namely students' initial concepts are wrong, specialization misconceptions are
caused by students' associative thinking, namely students think a concept is always the same
as another concept, and calculation misconceptions are caused by wrong intuition, namely
students give answers with less careful in calculations.
