Hydrocarbons structure and nomenclature are still an obstacle for most of high school students, especially students of class XI MIA at SMA Muhammadiyah 1 Pontianak. The purpose of this study was to determine the difference in the ability to solve problems of students who were taught using the Student Centered Learning approach based on Creative Problem Solving with students who were taught using conventional methods on the sub-material structure and nomenclature of hydrocarbons and the magnitude of the learning effect. This research used a Quasi Experimental Design model. The research design used was a non-equivalent control group design. The results of the research showed that there was significantly difference in the ability to solve problems between students of class XI MIA SMA Muhammadiyah 1 Pontianak who are taught using the CPS-based SCL approach and students who are taught using conventional methods on the submaterial of nomenclature of compounds and hydrocarbons structures. The magnitude of the effect given is 33%. Thus, CPSbased SCL learning is effective in improving students ability to solve hydrocarbons structures problems and nomenclature of hydrocarbon compounds.
