Abstract

This study aims to describe the types of errors of students in solving mathematical story problems of integer material based on the error categories stated by Newman. This research is descriptive qualitative research. The subjects of this study were students of SMP Yapis Merauke using the snowball sampling technique, obtained by three students with high, medium, and low ability categories. The data collection techniques used are tests and interviews, then the test results and interviews are analyzed based on Newman's errors. The results showed that the types of mistakes made can be seen from the subject's ability to solve mathematical story problems: 1) category reading error, the subject is high in making mistakes with good ability, the subject is making mistakes with sufficient ability, and the low subject made a mistake with severely lacking ability. 2) The comprehension type of error does not occur in high subjects with good ability, subjects are making mistakes with sufficient ability, and low subjects make mistakes with less ability. 3) The type of error in high and medium subjects is the same making mistakes with sufficient ability, while low subjects make mistakes with less ability. 4) The type of process skill error in high, medium, and low subjects is the same, namely making mistakes with less ability. 5) The type of encoding error in high, medium, and low subjects is the same making a mistake with less ability
