STUDENTS"™ PERCEPTION TOWARDS THE USE OF PODCAST FOR LEARNING ENGLISH

Abstract: Technology developments have changed human life and embrace education sector. The word podcast derived from iPod and broadcast. Several researches finding towards the use of podcast had been reported to be positive, but there had been few research towards students"™ perception conducted in Indonesia. Writer hopes to bring the common picture of Tanjungpura University eight semester students"™ perceptions towards the use of podcast for learning English. This research used case study as its methodology. The current study had shown that students"™ hold positive perception towards the use of podcast for learning English. The research findings shown positive results and all students agreed that podcast had increased their listening and speaking skills, as well as their pronunciation, vocabulary, motivation, increased self confidence, lead to be an autonomous learner and change their attitudes towards English language itself. Podcast benefited language learners in terms of time, space, and flexibility.

Abstrak: Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui persepsi mahasiswa terhadap podcast dalam belajar bahasa Inggris. Metode yang dipakai dalam penelitian ini adalah studi kasus. Subjek dari penelitian ini adalah mahasiswa Universitas Tanjungpura, semester 8 Pontianak, tahun ajaran 2013/2014. Teknik pengumpulan data adalah komunikasi secara tidak langsung dan langsung, sedangkan alat yang digunakan dalam pengumpulan data adalah kuesioner dan wawancara. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa mahasiswa mempunyai persepsi positif terhadap penggunaan podcast dalam belajar bahasa Inggris. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa persepsi mahasiswa terhadap penggunaan podcast dalam belajar bahasa Inggris adalah menyenangkan, podcast sangat flexible, podcast merupakan alat yang sangat berguna untuk belajar bahasa Inggris, dan podcast dapat meningkatkan kemampuan berbicara, mendengar, membaca dan menulis.
