Abstract

The kidney is an excretory organ that plays a role in maintaining body homeostasis through the process of removing residual substances of drug metabolism. The Dayak people of Kalimantan use bajakah tampala extract (Spatholobus littoralis Hassk.) as a traditional medicine. Acute dose testing has been carried out but information on subchronic dose toxicity is not yet available. This study aims to assess the effect of subchronic doses of ethanol extract of bajakah tampala stems that cause toxic effects on the macroscopic structure of the kidneys of male Wistar rats. This study used bajakah tampala stem with ethanol solvent and 3-month-old male wistar white rats as test animals. The research method used a completely randomized design (CRD) with 4 treatments and 5 replicates, namely normal control and 3 treatments with doses of 250; 500; and 1000 mg/kg BW orally for 28 days. The parameters observed were the anatomical structure of the kidneys and the average relative weight of the kidney organs. The results obtained were bajakah tampala stem extract did not show significant toxic effects on the anatomical structure of the kidneys and the average relative weight of the kidney organs. The conclusion of this study is that ethanol extract of bajakah tampala does not cause toxic effects on the anatomical structure of the kidneys and the average relative weight of the kidney organs.
