Abstract

A car is a vehicle to facilitate humans on the highway, where the operation process requires several systems, one of which is the steering system. The steering system on each car has various differences, therefore in this design using a simple steering system tie rod to improve the design of the Kapuas I electric car steering system, Faculty of Engineering, UNTAN by varying the three variations, wheelbase namely 1200 mm, 1300 mm and 1400 mm as well as material. Tie rod alloy steel and plain carbon steel. This steering system, there is the most dangerous effect for the driver if the steering system component fails that could result in an accident. This study aims to analyze the turning radius of the vehicle against three variations of the wheelbase, analyze the failure of the material tie rod on the phenomenon buckling and recommend a simple steering system tie rod for the Kapuas I electric car team, Faculty of Engineering, UNTAN. This research uses 3 methods, such as literature study as the author"™s review of references related to research, simulation method as a depiction of a system using a computer with CAD software for wheel turning angle simulation and simulation buckling tie rod, and descriptive analysis to analyze the results of the turning radius of the vehicle and simulation results of buckling tie rods. Then the results of this study are the inner wheel turning angle of 29,180, the outer wheel turning angle of 26,830, the wheelbase is best in WBS I and the turning radius is 2,4 m and the best material for tie rods is BCK A2-B1.
