Abstract

In modern times, technological developments show developments that are increasingly rapid, both in the automotive sector and the industrial sector, this is closely related to increasing the ability to be able to measure the performance of a machine. Machine performance studies are very important to improve the performance of a machine because each machine product has a different performance, but to know the performance of a machine, a tool is needed to measure the performance of an engine in the form of an engine test bed. This study aims to obtain a design and make a prototype engine test bed type prony brake using a disc brake dynamometer. The research method used is an experimental method. This method is a direct experiment and collects initial data before testing as well as test results data. The initial data before testing is in the form of specifications of the test machine used, gear ratio and dynamometer arm distance, while the test results obtained are in the form of the measured load on the loadcell and the time required for emptying the burette. After carrying out the initial data collection process before the test and the test results data, the calculation process or data processing will be carried out to obtain the torque, power, bmep and sfc values. From the results of the performance testing of the engine test bed using a disc brake type dynamometer, it was found that the accuracy level is quite good considering the cost of manufacture which uses a very affordable cost compared to engine test bed test equipment on the market. Based on the specifications of the test engine which has a torque and power output value of 10.8 Nm and 3.5 kW, this engine test bed is able to record a torque value of 9.41 Nm at 2650 rpm and a power of 2.73 kW at 2800 rpm, and is able to record consumption specific fuel and power output based on cylinder volume. In conclusion, the design of the engine test bed test equipment was obtained to be able to record several aspects needed to test a machine.
