Abstract

ST37 steel is a type of low carbon steel with a carbon content of 0.16% by weight. With a low amount of carbon, it is not possible to harden (hardening) to improve its mechanical properties. One way that can be done is by adding carbon elements to steel, namely through the carburizing process. The method used for carbon addition is pack carburizing with variations in the composition and size of the carbon mesh and catalyst.   The activated carbon used is coconut shell charcoal and a kepah clam catalyst. The pack carburizing process is carried out at a temperature of 950 ° C and the holding time is for 60. From this study, it can be concluded that the composition and size of the mesh have a significant influence on the hardness value of ST37 steel given the pack carburizing treatment. The highest hardness value was obtained at mesh 50 composition of 60/40% carbon against the catalyst with a value of 787,1 HV.
