Abstract

West Kalimantan, particularly Mempawah Regency's Sungai Pinyuh District, has significant potential in the livestock sector, especially in optimizing chicken manure waste. Traditional drying methods using solar heat are often affected by weather conditions, leading to less effective manure drying and lower-quality organic fertilizer. This study seeks to design and test a drying furnace for chicken manure using alternative solid waste fuels. The research involves creating and testing a furnace with three types of fuels: firewood, rice husks, and coconut shells. The testing monitored changes in temperature, moisture content, and mass of the manure at 5-minute intervals over a 60-minute period. Results showed that the temperature rise led to a decrease in the mass of both the alternative fuels and the chicken manure. Specifically, the mass reduction rates were: firewood at 0.02 kg/min, rice husks at 0.04 kg/min, and coconut shells at 0.03 kg/min. Among the three fuels, firewood proved most efficient, achieving a manure drying standard of 50-60% moisture content. Despite rice husks having similar results, firewood was preferred due to its superior energy efficiency. This study concludes that firewood is the best choice for drying chicken manure, as it meets the necessary standards more effectively than the other tested fuels.
