Abstract

Speaking anxiety is a common challenge for Indonesian students learning English as a foreign language. This study investigated the factors contributing to students' speaking anxiety, focusing on both internal and external causes. Internal factors, such as low self-efficacy, self-doubt, and fear of making mistakes, were identified, alongside external factors, including fear of negative evaluation, lack of preparation time, and environmental pressures. A review of studies from 2018"“2024 highlighted the complex nature of speaking anxiety, with psychological, linguistic, and social elements interacting. The relationship between anxiety and performance was also examined, revealing that anxiety negatively impacts speaking ability, further intensifying the anxiety. The review suggested that fostering a supportive classroom environment and using interactive teaching strategies, such as peer evaluation, could help alleviate anxiety and improve speaking skills. Addressing the root causes of speaking anxiety is essential for enhancing language acquisition and communication skills among Indonesian students in a globalized context.
