Abstract Microplastics are small plastic particles divided into two categories, namely LMP (1"“5 mm) and SMP (<1 mm), which are formed through physical or chemical degradation. Primary microplastics are intentionally produced, such as in cosmetics and textiles, while secondary microplastics come from large plastic fragments. This study used a literature study method with a qualitative approach to assess the effectiveness of microplastic removal in Drinking Water Treatment Plants (WTP). The results showed a removal efficiency of 93 ± 5%, with sand filtration as the most effective stage (78 ± 9%). Reverse osmosis is more efficient than conventional methods such as ozonation and GAC filtration. During the process, the size of the microplastic fragments decreases, while the fiber size remains the same. The concentration of microplastics in treated water was recorded at 0.06 ± 0.04 MP/L, which is relatively low. However, further studies are needed to assess the potential for microplastic release from WTP materials. These findings provide an important basis for controlling microplastics in order to maintain drinking water quality.References
